Porcelain veneers serve as a restorative solution that extends beyond tooth repair, they help patients regain their smiles and confidence. This resource provides practical guidance on models, preparation depth, bonding procedures, and shade communication for achieving predictable all-ceramic outcomes.
Successful veneer cases restore treated teeth while often providing the additional benefit of restoring patient self-confidence. Below, our team shares insights from daily all-ceramic restoration work.
Models
Pre-operative, post-operative, diagnostic wax-ups, and acrylic mock-ups help communicate proper incisal edge position, contour, and basic tooth morphology. Our team can create beautiful diagnostic wax-ups to present to your patient, along with a putty matrix for temporaries fabrication.
Veneer Preparations
For labial veneers, preparation depth should be 0.75 to 1.0 mm with shallow chamfer margins to accommodate blocking porcelain for color correction. When stump shade matches the desired restoration, only 0.5 mm reduction is needed. Incisal reduction requires 1.5 mm. Diastema closure requires increased proximal preparation for proper transitional contour.
Preparation Design
Deeper preparations (0.75 to 1.0 mm) accommodate dark stump shades requiring opaceous dentin blocking layers. Conservative 0.5 mm preps work for shades matching the final restoration. Shallow chamfer margins withstand the mechanical and chemical etching processes better than thin bevels.
Bonding
Always check material expiration dates and use only fresh bonding materials. Debonding, breakage, and discoloration are often traceable to old silane primer and, occasionally, to out-of-date bonding resins. Recurring debond issues typically indicate contaminated tooth interfaces, solvable through pumice and re-etching.
Shade Communication
Practitioners should provide pre- and post-preparation photographs with visible shade tabs matching both the pre-operative tooth and post-operative prep. Nothing communicates shade and characterization better than photographs.
